Special congressional election off and running 

Early over a vote button
Advance in-person absentee voting has started today, Feb. 16, for the U.S. House of Representatives District 14 seat. This election will fill a vacancy due to the resignation of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

The special election will be held March 10, in Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Murray, Paulding, Polk, Walker, Whitfield, and portions of Cobb Counties. A special runoff election, if needed, will be held April 7.

This election is only for voters in U.S. House District 14. Check the My Voter Page to confirm your House district.

Be part of a team committed to service and excellence. Enjoy a 24/48 schedule, 10 shifts a month. Paid training is provided.

Stylish and sustainable options for free

Teens will have help to be their best dressed at Prom Swap events 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. for the next two Saturdays. Dresses, suits and more have been donated by the community and are free for the taking. Everything is first-come, first-served.

Locations for the events are:
Saturday, Feb. 21, at South Cobb Library, 805 Clay Road, Mableton
Saturday, Feb. 28, at Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street, Marietta

Meet with community leaders next week

Chairwoman Lisa Cupid invites the public to her Black History Month Dessert Social, 7 - 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at 45 South Avenue SE, Marietta. The event will include discussions and remarks by members of Cobb County’s Black leadership.

The program will feature:
  • State Court Judge Bridgette Campbell
  • Juvenile Court Judge Kareem West
  • Superior Court Judge Sonja Brown
  • Magistrate Court Judge Che Karega
Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with local leaders, celebrate Black history, and foster connections that strengthen the community.

Public can review SPLOST projects

Community leaders hope to renew Cobb County’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. This one-percent sales tax has been in place for decades, helping to fund major capital projects such as courthouses, community centers, parks, libraries, and large-scale transportation improvements.

As part of the process, officials continue to host open house engagement meetings with residents to answer questions and gather feedback on the proposed SPLOST program list. Drop in anytime between 6 - 8 p.m. on the following dates:
  • Feb. 25 – Smyrna Community Center, 1250 Powder Springs Street, Smyrna
  • March 5 – Cobb Civic Center, 548 South Marietta Parkway SE, Marietta
  • March 10 – Ben Robertson Community Center, 2753 Watts Drive, Kennesaw

Behind the scenes at the sheriff's office

Cobb sheriff's deputies on horeback
The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for its next Citizens Academy — a free, seven-week, behind-the-scenes experience. The hands-on course includes interactive workshops, a look at specialized units and equipment, and direct conversations with sheriff’s office leadership. It will be held 6:30 - 9 p.m. Thursdays, March 5 - April 23, at various locations.

Apply here by Friday, Feb. 27. Those signing up must be 18 or older, complete an application, and pass a background check.

Help yourself, help your neighbors

CERT volunteers training
Get CERT-ified to assist first responders. Join Cobb's Community Emergency Response Team volunteers and learn these skills: 
  • Disaster awareness
  • Fire and utility safety
  • Medical/CPR/first aid
  • Search and rescue
  • Organization for disasters
  • Disaster psychology
  • Terrorism awareness
This is a volunteer opportunity for young, old, those working and retirees. The next training sessions will be held March 7, 14 and 21.

Countdown to the library book sale

Books for sale
The moment you’ve been waiting for is almost here. Be ready to swarm the Cobb Civic Center in Marietta, March 13 - 15, to make your choices from thousands of books, DVDs, puzzles, and more. Items will be priced from 10 cents to $4.

Hours will be 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday. The Civic Center, located at 548 South Marietta Parkway, will feature plenty of free parking. The special "Bring Your Own Box" flat-rate sale will take place on Sunday. All proceeds directly support the Cobb County Public Library’s 15 branches and bookmobile.

The 2026 Homestead Exemption application is now open. Apply by April 1 to ensure your exemption goes into effect for your 2026 property tax bill. Visit CobbTax.gov to learn more and submit your application.

Bring your business to the Senior Expo

Cobb County Senior Services’ Annual Expo is returning this year to a new location. Make plans to attend 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at Jim R. Miller Park and Event Center. This larger venue will provide more space for seniors, their caregivers and families to connect with valuable resources, receive health screenings, and enjoy fitness demonstrations.

Currently, Senior Services is seeking local businesses and community organizations that cater to older adults to participate as vendors. Last year’s event attracted more than 1,800 attendees, making it a high-visibility, impactful community event. For more information or to reserve a spot as a vendor, visit here.
