Protect your ghouls and goblins on Halloween

Trick or Treaters get candy
Keep this year's scary holiday safe for trick-or-treaters. The National Safety Council and American Red Cross have tips to help protect kids celebrating this Friday. Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. Lack of visibility can be a factor in these incidents.
  • Choose a costume that won't cause safety hazards; all costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant.
  • If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags. Give them glow sticks and flashlights.
  • Use nontoxic makeup rather than masks that might obscure their vision.
  • A responsible adult with a flashlight should accompany young children.
  • If your older children are going alone, plan and review an acceptable route with them.
  • Agree on a specific time children should return home.
  • Teach children to only approach residences with lit porch lights and never enter a stranger's home or vehicle.
  • Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and stick with their friends. Use sidewalks instead of walking on the road.

Youth commission application deadline coming up

High school students in grades 9 - 12 can apply now for the 2025-26 Cobb County Youth Commission. The program provides an opportunity to learn about the inner workings of local government, engage in civic affairs, and become leaders of change in the community.

Previously, students designed service projects, ran town halls, engaged with staff and community leaders, and visited the state capitol.

Most sessions will be held in the evenings and some on weekends. Apply by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29.
