Keep this year's scary holiday safe for trick-or-treaters. The National Safety Council and American Red Cross have tips to help protect kids celebrating this Friday. Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. Lack of visibility can be a factor in these incidents.
Choose a costume that won't cause safety hazards; all costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant.
If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags. Give them glow sticks and flashlights.
Use nontoxic makeup rather than masks that might obscure their vision.
A responsible adult with a flashlight should accompany young children.
If your older children are going alone, plan and review an acceptable route with them.
Agree on a specific time children should return home.
Teach children to only approach residences with lit porch lights and never enter a stranger's home or vehicle.
Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and stick with their friends. Use sidewalks instead of walking on the road.
