Remembering victims of domestic violence

LiveSafe Resources will host a Cobb County Domestic Violence Vigil 6 - 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Glover Park in Marietta. The event, honoring the victims of domestic violence in Georgia who lost their lives in 2024, will include guest speakers sharing stories and insights, opportunities for community support and resources, vocal performances, and the reading of names in memory of those lost.

Banned Books Week, Oct. 5 - 11, is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and highlighting the value of open access to information. It brings together the entire bookish community in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas.

Join Cobb County Public Library in standing up for intellectual freedom by participating in the Banned and Challenged Books Beanstack Reading Challenge throughout October. Read at least 300 minutes to complete the challenge and enter to win one of 10 Banned Books Week prize packs. For ages 18 and older. Register here.

A festival of historic proportions Saturday

The Mable House Harvest Festival brings you 19th century entertainment 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11. Take a free journey into the past with hands-on demonstrations that showcase the skills of early American farmers, including blacksmithing, pottery, and weaving. Learn about the daily tasks of 1800s farm life, such as hand spinning, butter churning, and the preparation of traditional foods like Johnny Cakes. 

There will be live music and performances throughout the day. Bring your lawn chairs or a blanket to relax. There will be plenty of opportunities for all ages to get creative, with activities like candle making, cornhusk doll crafting, and letter stamping.

While you’re there, explore the Mable House and take a free guided tour. The Mable House Historic grounds are located at 5239 Floyd Road, Mableton.

Property tax payments are due by Wednesday, Oct. 15, and must be received or USPS postmarked by the due date to be considered on time. Payments may be made online, by phone, mail, or in person. Processing fees may apply.

Youth commission program provides insight

High school students in grades 9 - 12 can apply now for the 2025-26 Cobb County Youth Commission. The program provides an opportunity to learn about the inner workings of local government, engage in civic affairs, and become leaders of change in the community. In previous years, students have designed service projects, town halls, met and engaged with community leaders, and visited the state capitol. Most sessions will be held in the evenings and some on weekends. Apply by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17.

Recycling events offer chances to clean up

Declutter your home responsibly at upcoming Keep Cobb Beautiful events:
  • 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Oct. 18 - Household Hazardous Waste Amnesty Day at Jim Miller Park, 2245 Callaway Road, Marietta. Safely dispose of chemicals, paint, batteries, fluorescent lights and more. You must register for this event. Find the list of accepted items and register here.
  • 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Oct. 25 - Medication Disposal events. Dispose of old, unwanted medications safely and responsibly at one of three drop-off sites. Go here for details.
  • 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Nov. 8 - Community Recycling Event at Jim Miller Park. More info and RSVP here.

Spooky season brings thrills, chills and family fun

The annual Fall Festival of Fun will unpack free family fun 5 - 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Jim R. Miller Park in Marietta. There will be hayride adventures on the hay-bale express, carnival game prizes, and photo booth opportunities with your favorite storybook, movie and superhero characters. Parking, entry, performances, and most activities are free.

In addition, it will be the first night of the Cobb PARKS Haunted House that will run through Oct. 31 at Jim R. Miller Park. Pre-registration will be required. Admission $5. Hours vary. Register for the Haunted House here.

Oct. 10 - Paint Your Own Pumpkin Candy Dish at Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center

Oct. 14 - Pumpkin Painting at Gritters Library
3 - 5 p.m. Bring your own pumpkin and decorate it! Fun for all ages (kids 8 and under with adult).

Oct. 14 - STEAM Team: Pumpkin Drop Challenge at Switzer Library 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. Ages 8 - 12. Design a device to protect your pumpkin in this spooky twist on the classic egg drop!

Oct. 17 and 18 - Trick or Treatment Spooky Tour at R.L. Sutton Water Reclamation Facility, Smyrna, 6:30 - 9 p.m. Take a chilling after-dark tour with creepy, educational twists. Register here.

Meet the author, join the club

The Powder Springs community’s One Book, One City: Tween Challenge 2025 author talk, discussion and book signing program will feature writer Karen Strong and her novel The Secret Dead Club 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Thurman Springs Park’s Hardy Family Automotive Amphitheatre, 4485 Pineview Drive in downtown Powder Springs. The event will take place during the City of Powder Springs Trunk-or-Treat Fall Festival.

The Secret Dead Club Chat and Craft program for tweens ages 9 to 13 starts 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at the Powder Springs Library, 4181 Atlanta Street Craft materials and snacks from the book – cupcakes, double chocolate cookies and fruit punch – will be provided.

Cobb County Procurement Services Department and Cobb County Schools will be hosting a "How to Do Business with Cobb County Government" meeting 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Cobb Civic Center in Marietta.

Free microchips for your furry companions

Bring your cat(s) and dog(s) to a Cobb County Animal Services free microchip clinic at the Tim D. Lee Senior Center in Marietta 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. Cobb residents only. No registration required.

Microchipping offers a permanent, lifelong form of identification, dramatically increasing the chances of a happy reunion if your pet gets lost. The senior center is located at 3332 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta.

Veterans event coming to Cobb this month

The annual We Care Vet Fair will return to the Cobb County Civic Center in Marietta 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21. The event is open to veterans, current military, family members and caregivers.

A variety of services will be offered, including legal support, assistance with claims and appeals, healthcare assistance and employment opportunities. More than 100 local, state, and federal agencies will be there to help - including the Georgia Department of Veterans Services. Free admission and free parking available.

Advance Voting for the Nov. 4, Public Service Commissioner Special General/Municipal General Election begins Oct. 14. You can find a map of the advance voting locations and wait times for the Public Service Commissioner Special General/Municipal General Election here. There is no voting on Saturday, Nov. 1, through Monday, Nov. 3.

Cobb libraries are places to help those in need

Opportunities are available for community residents to donate food, clothing, and personal hygiene products for current and ongoing collection drives at various Cobb library locations. These events include school clothing drives, the Care Cabinet, hygiene product donation drives, and providing food to MUST ministries.

Proposed code amendments up for public review

County Code amendments will be presented at the Board of Commissioners work session 1:30 p.m. Oct. 28, in the 2nd Floor Meeting Room, David Hankerson Building, 100 Cherokee Street, Marietta.

At 9 a.m. Nov. 12, and 6 p.m. Nov. 20, the Board of Commissioners will conduct public hearings to solicit comments and input on proposed amendments to the certain chapters, articles, divisions, and sections of the Official Code of Cobb County, Georgia. Adoption of the code amendments will be considered at the Nov. 20 meeting, following the second public hearing.

Cobb's Senior Services has unveiled a new lunch option for those near their Powder Springs Center. Partnering with Mableton restaurant Cafe Social House, the public is invited in to enjoy lunch and socialization 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Monday - Friday.
