New learning opportunities are coming to Cobb for the senior set, 55 years and up. Explore the center's new space, meet instructors, and learn about upcoming classes at the grand opening of the new BEST Learning Center 10 - 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Senior Wellness Center in Marietta, 1150 Powder Springs Street, Marietta. Light refreshments will be available.
BEST, Broadening and Enriching Seniors Together, is a peer-to-peer education program utilizing specially trained or experienced volunteers who make presentations on important topics facing seniors today.
The final Wine Down Wednesday lineup of the 2025 season features The LeVert Experience and Bunny DeBarge, hosted by Big Bank, at the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre. Show up Sept. 10 for music under the stars. Gates will open at 6 p.m. with the show starting at 7 p.m. Get lawn and arena tickets free, two per transaction, here. Table seats are available for $20 table seat.
On Saturday, Sept. 13, the amphitheatre will provide music fans with the chance to experience an evening of R&B by Joe and Dru Hill. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Attendees can bring their own food and drinks, but vendors will also be on site. Purchase tickets here.
Rescheduled opening ceremony this Thursday
The new date for the ribbon cutting of the Bob Callan Trail extension and trailhead will take place 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11. The event, held by the Cumberland Community Improvement District, will take place at the new trailhead on the northeast quadrant of the Windy Hill Road and Bentley Road intersection.

Make children's wishes come true
Lace up your fastest kicks and join us for the Cobb Make-A-Wish 5K 8 a.m Saturday, Oct. 4, starting from Marietta Square. This Peachtree Road Race qualifier is more than just a run — it’s a chance to make wishes come true for local kids with critical illnesses.
Bring your friends and family – everyone’s a winner when wishes come true! Register in advance by Sept. 14 and you are guaranteed a race shirt. Walk-up registration begins at 7 a.m.
Come for the rides and food. Stay for the shows and exhibits. The North Georgia State Fair is coming back soon with amusements for all interests Sept. 18 - 28. This year's shows include motocross, a demolition derby, monster trucks, bull riders, magicians, circus, a hypnotist, racing pigs, and Frisbee dogs.
New traffic plans: All vehicles will be directed to County Services Parkway. Eastbound Al Bishop Drive will be closed to through traffic starting one hour prior to the fair opening each day. Westbound Al Bishop Drive will be two-laned for incoming fair traffic. Uber/Lyft pick-up and drop-off will be located at the Cobb Safety Village, 1220 Al Bishop Drive, Marietta. This year, parking is free.
In addition, Cobb County Senior Services invites adults 55 and older to enjoy a morning of fun and entertainment at Senior Day at the North Georgia State Fair Friday, Sept. 19. Free admission and no registration required. More details about Senior Day here.
Helping advocate for abused children
The deadline to apply for the next Court Appointed Special Advocate program training is Friday, Sept. 12. CASA volunteers support neglected or abused children who are removed from their homes and placed in foster care. Volunteers advocate for children, interact with their families, therapists, and teachers, and provide recommendations to the court. The goal is to help reunite children with their families or find them a permanent, loving home. Cobb County Juvenile Court will begin the next training sessions Monday, Sept. 22.
The Joanne P. Stratton Library will be closed beginning Sept. 15 for a renovation project that is expected to last into early 2026. The library, located at 1100 Powder Springs Road, Marietta, will receive a $500,000 interior makeover, including the addition of two study rooms, upgrades to the community meeting room, updated furniture and more. The project is funded from the county’s 2022 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
Mountain View Regional Library will be closed Thursday, Sept. 11 through Saturday, Sept. 13, for a large entrance door replacement project. The library, at 3320 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta, is scheduled to reopen Sunday, Sept. 14. Mountain View patrons can request pick-up times for holds online via the Curbside Request Form here.

Polished chrome and shiny steel on display
The Cobb County Police Community Affairs Unit's Cool Cars and Cops show is happening 9 a.m. - noon Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Cobb County Civic Center in Marietta. Event entry is free, and the public can enjoy live music and food trucks along with the display of various show vehicles.
This charity event assists the Community Affairs Unit and the SWAT Santa program with purchasing gifts for children whose families experience financial hardship during the holiday season. The cost for entering show vehicles is $30. Entry is $20 for car clubs with 10 or more registered. Trophies will be awarded for winning entries.
