Entertainment and artistry at festival Saturday

Dine, shop, and be entertained at the Cobb International Festival 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Jim R. Miller Park and Event Center in Marietta. Take in the sights and sounds of dancers, singers, activities and more while tasting international cuisine. Admission and parking are free.

Shuttles to the event center will be available traveling from the North Lot for ADA guests and those needing assistance. A shuttle will also be available from the gate to the event center, for those needing assistance. Jim R. Miller Park and Event Center is located at 2245 Callaway Road, Marietta.

Watch your inbox for property tax bills

All Cobb County's 2025 tax bills are in the mail. If you signed up for tax bill e-alerts by Aug. 6, you will receive a text message or email alert letting you know your bill is ready. Payments are due by Oct. 15 and must be received or USPS postmarked by the due date to be considered on time.

These are official communications from the Cobb County Tax Commissioner's Office. Emails will come from tax@cobbtax.gov, and text messages from the number 68217. If you have any questions regarding e-alerts or your tax bill, visit the website at CobbTax.gov or call (770) 528-8600.

Making every pollination count

The 2025 Great Southeast Pollinator Census, will take place on Friday, Aug. 22, and Saturday, Aug. 23. The census is a citizen science project created by the University of Georgia designed for everyone to participate and make a difference for pollinator conservation.

The Master Gardeners of Cobb County are hosting counting events at several locations. Find a location near you in the flyer here.
 

Seniors to be honored for their contributions

The Senior Citizen Council of Cobb will celebrate National Senior Citizens Day 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Piedmont Church Conference Center in Marietta. Each year the council holds a celebratory award luncheon where awardees are presented with a certificate of recognition issued and presented by a Cobb County commissioner. The celebration includes lunch, music and entertainment for the attendees. Please register by Aug. 20 so the organization can get an accurate food count. The center is located at 570 Piedmont Road, Marietta.

The Kaiser Permanente Summer Movie Series concludes 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, with a free showing of "The Peanuts Movie" at the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre. 

Gates will open at 6 p.m. No tickets will be required. You can bring your own food and drink, and parking is free. First-come, first-served, rain or shine. The amphitheatre is located at 5239 Floyd Road, Mableton.

Caring companions available at a low cost

The Cobb County Animal Shelter will continue its popular $25 "Adopt a Friend" special through September. Customers can adopt a dog or cat for just $25 or donate cat or dog food and the shelter will waive the $25 fee.

Library branch closing for renovations

The Joanne P. Stratton Library will be closed beginning Sept. 15 for a renovation project that is expected to last into early 2026. The library, located at 1100 Powder Springs Road, Marietta, will receive a $500,000 interior makeover, including the addition of two study rooms, upgrades to the community meeting room, updated furniture and more. The project is funded from the county’s 2022 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.

Stratton patrons can visit other branches for their library needs, including nearby Charles D. Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street in downtown Marietta or Sibley Library at 1539 South Cobb Drive. The Stratton Library book drop will be closed during the renovation.

CERTify yourself as someone who can help

The Community Emergency Response Team program helps residents learn disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their areas and trains them in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

To join Cobb County CERT, you must be over the age of 16, live, work or worship in Cobb, and pass a criminal history background check. The remaining training classes scheduled for 2025:
  • Sept. 6, 13 and 20
  • Oct. 4, 11 and 18
  • Nov. 1, 8 and 15
The classes are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. on three consecutive Saturdays at Cobb County Emergency Management Agency, 140 North Marietta Parkway, Marietta. Go here for more information.

Hot wheels roll in for annual charity show

The Cobb County Police Community Affairs Unit's Cool Cars and Cops show is coming up 9 a.m. - noon Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Cobb County Civic Center in Marietta. Event entry is free, and the public can enjoy live music and food trucks along with the display of various show vehicles.

This charity event assists the Community Affairs Unit and the SWAT Santa program with purchasing gifts for children whose families experience financial hardship during the holiday season. The cost for entering show vehicles is $30. Entry is $20 for car clubs with 10 or more registered. Trophies will be awarded for winning entries. During the show, there will be a special raffle of a hunting safari trip to Africa for three people. (Airfare not included.)

New facility to open for senior classes

The community is invited to the free grand opening of the new BEST Learning Center at the Senior Wellness Center in Marietta. The open house will be 10 - 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 1150 Powder Springs Street, Marietta.

Attendees can explore the center's new space, meet instructors, and learn about the exciting classes it will be offering. Light refreshments will be available. BEST is a peer-to-peer education program, utilizing specially trained or experienced volunteers who make presentations on important and relevant topics facing seniors today.

Volunteers needed as children's advocates

The deadline to apply for the next Court Appointed Special Advocate program training is Sept. 12. CASA volunteers support neglected or abused children who are removed from their homes and placed in foster care. Volunteers advocate for children, interact with their families, therapists, and teachers, and provide recommendations to the court. The goal is to help reunite children with their families or find them a permanent, loving home. Cobb County Juvenile Court will begin the next training sessions Monday, Sept. 22.

Fair plans for traffic, Senior Day specials

The North Georgia State Fair is coming to Cobb Sept. 18 - 28, bringing with it new plans for attendees and their vehicles. All fair traffic will be directed to County Services Parkway. East bound Al Bishop Drive will be closed to through traffic daily during the fair starting one hour prior to opening (no turning onto Al Bishop Drive from Callaway Road.) West bound Al Bishop Drive will be two-laned for incoming fair traffic. Uber/Lyft pick-up and drop off will be located at the Cobb Safety Village.

In addition, Cobb County Senior Services invites adults 55 and older to enjoy a morning of fun and entertainment at Senior Day at the North Georgia State Fair. Free admission and no registration required. Start with a complimentary breakfast at 8 a.m. (while supplies last), then explore the petting zoo, exhibits, rides, and food vendors until 1 p.m. Go here for more details.

 

When you wish upon a 5K

A bit of effort on your part can make dreams come true for local kids. Cobb County will host this year's Make-A-Wish 5K on Saturday, Oct. 4, in downtown Marietta. Proceeds from the event are donated to Make-A-Wish Georgia so it can grant requests for Cobb County children with critical illnesses.

The Make-A-Wish 5K is a Peachtree Road Race qualifying event. Participants assemble on the Marietta Square, and the race begins at 8 a.m. Walk-up registration begins at 7 a.m. Go here to register early and find more information.

Hundreds of bicyclists took to the Silver Comet Trail to celebrate the opening of the Cobb Extension that linked the trail to Atlanta and the Beltline. Check out the ride and what some of our elected leaders had to say.

Cobb's Magistrate Court recently renamed a courtroom in honor of Rajesh "Raj" Mehta, a longtime Cobb court official. Mehta died while intervening in a dispute in Fulton County.
